The former Bishop of Galway, Dr Eamonn Casey, has said he is 'deeply sorry' for the grave hurt he caused in the past.

Speaking to RTÉ News from his new home in Shanaglish, Co Galway, Dr Casey said he regretted that in the past he had let down a number of people.

Dr Casey said he was very pleased to be back in Ireland and he asked for privacy as he starts his new life.

He refused to answer any other questions.

Dr Casey left Galway 14 years ago after acknowledging that he had had a relationship with American woman Annie Murphy and was the father of her son Peter.

He has since lived in Mexico, Ecuador and in England where he served as a curate and a hospital chaplain for the past six years.
