Ruairí Brugha, a former Fianna Fáil TD and son of Cathal Brugha, has died in a Dublin hospital.

Mr Brugha was married to Máire MacSwiney, the only child of Lord Mayor of Cork Terence MacSwiney.

Cathal Brugha was Minister for Defence in the first Dáil, and went on to oppose the Anglo-Irish Treaty. He was killed during the Civil War.

Ruairí Brugha, 88, was elected Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin South in 1973 and was also appointed to the European Parliament in 1977. He served in the Seanad until the 1980s.
