A 49-year-old Sligo man who raped his wife just weeks after she had given birth to their fifth child in July 1997 has been jailed for six years.

Three years ago, the man was convicted and jailed for the same offence, but the conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal on a technicality and a retrial was ordered.

He was convicted again by a jury last November.

At the Central Criminal Court today, his wife questioned why the case had taken eight and a half years to come to court and she described that period as a nightmare.

Her husband, who had believed he could not be prosecuted for raping her because he was her husband, still protests his innocence.
