Number of asylum seekers drops 9% in 2005

The number of asylum seekers applying for refugee status fell by 9% this year to over 4,000.

The number of asylum seekers applying for refugee status fell by 9% this year to over 4,000.

The five countries from which the most asylum seekers came were Nigeria, Somalia, Romania, Sudan and Iran.

The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell said 393 deportation orders were made over the past year.
