A British human rights worker and her parents have been kidnapped by gunmen in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah.

Palestinian police said they were abducted as they entered Gaza from Egypt.

A spokesman for the British consulate in east Jerusalem has confirmed the kidnappings but would not release the names of the victims.

The woman is reported to be 24-year-old Kate Burton from a Gaza-based human rights group called Al Mezan.

A major security operation is underway to find the family.
