Transport networks have been dealing with one of the busiest periods of the year as tens of thousands of people travel home or abroad for Christmas.

Iarnród Éireann said it expected some 100,000 passengers to travel by rail today.

The same numbers were estimated to go through Dublin, Shannon and Cork airports.

While the weather is expected to be good for driving conditions, motorists are being advised to be extra careful because of the heavy traffic.
