Sinn Féin has rejected the British government's proposals to deal with paramilitaries who are fugitives from justice.

Legislation going through Westminster would allow so-called 'on the run' return to Northern Ireland without facing a trial or going to prison.

However, Sinn Féin has come out against the proposals because the amnesty would also be available to members of the security forces.

The party's Vice President, Pat Doherty, accused the British government of sleight of hand and claimed it was far removed from what had been agreed at Weston Park in 2001.

The party has called on the Northern Secretary, Peter Hain, to withdraw the proposals.

The SDLP has accused Sinn Féin of doing a u-turn on the issue.

The British government has indicated it will be pressing ahead with a controversial bill.
