The Labour Party has called on the Minister for Education to extend the remit of the Residential Institutions Redress Board to allow the former residents of more institutions to apply for compensation.

The party says some former residents are ineligible because there are no records of a State body carrying out an inspection of an institution.

The Ashling Centre, which works with victims of abuse, estimates that up to 600 former residents could be affected.

Marie Therese O'Loughlin has been protesting outside Leinster House for the last eight weeks.

As an infant, she says she sustained burns injuries while a resident of the Morning Star Mother and Child Centre in Dublin in the early 1950s.

At a press conference, Labour's Joe Costello described as arbitrary, wrong and bizarre the fact that Marie Therese and other former residents of institutions do not qualify for compensation.

The Labour Party also wants the redress board to extend its closing date for compensation claims. The current deadline is next Thursday.
