Study into mental illness in prisons

It has been reported that the rate of severe mental illness among those in prison in Ireland is 40 times higher than the general community.

The Irish Times says that research carried out for the Irish Prison Service found that the rate of serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, among remand prisoners is at least twice the rate of similar studies carried out in prisons internationally.

The study, which has yet to be published, is said to highlight serious deficiencies in the health and justice systems.
