Carthy family make call over gardaMonday 05 December 2005 22.00
The family of John Carthy, who was shot dead by the Garda Emergency Response Unit in Abbeylara, Co Longford, in 2000, have called on the Government to block the promotion of an officer who was central to the conduct of the siege.
RTÉ News has learned that Detective Inspector Michael Jackson, who was the Chief Garda Negotiator in Abbeylara on the day, has now been approved and listed by the Garda Commissioner for promotion to the rank of Superintendent.
The news comes six weeks before the publication of the final report of the Barr tribunal which investigated the shooting.
John Carthy was shot dead on 20 April 2000.
