Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has accused Israel of not wanting peace despite a breakthrough in negotiations on easing border restrictions.

Mr Abbas criticised Israel's demand for Palestinian militants to disarm ahead of talks on statehood, and said Israel was acting as if it had no peace partner.

Earlier, the American Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, announced a crucial deal on Gaza border crossings after she delayed her return home in order to broker talks on the issue between the two sides.

Speaking in Jerusalem, Dr Rice said it was hoped a border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt - seen as economically crucial for the Palestinians - would be opened in ten days' time.

Since the Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza, Palestinian residents have been effectively prevented from leaving the enclave.

Israel remains concerned that the border crossing could be used for the movement of weapons.
