Síle de Valera, Minister of State at the Department of Education & Science, has announced that she is quitting politics.

Síle de Valera, Minister of State at the Department of Education & Science, has announced that she is quitting politics.

The Fianna Fáil TD for Clare says she will not let her name go forward for the next General Election.

She has been a TD since 1977 and served as Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht & the Islands from 1997 to 2002.

Ms de Valera is the granddaughter of the former Taoiseach and President, Eamon de Valera, and a cousin of Minister for Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív.

The de Valera name has been associated with politics since 1917.
