The DPP has decided that no-one should be prosecuted following the death of a nine-year-old girl in Cavan hospital nearly two years ago.
Frances Sheridan from Coothill died in February 2004 after she was told by doctors in Cavan General Hospital that she probably had a stomach bug and should go home.
Within hours she was rushed back to the hospital but was pronounced dead. Several weeks earlier she had had an operation to remove her appendix.
The DPP had been considering a garda file on the matter since August of last year. RTÉ News understands that further medical expertise was drafted in to consider the matter.
A decision has now been reached that no-one will be prosecuted as a result of what happened.
An internal investigation by the then North Eastern Health Board into the death found that there was a failure to administer and manage the girl's care properly. The report also highlighted the difficult working environment for some doctors within Cavan General Hospital.
