Indian and Pakistani army officers have shaken hands and exchanged a white flag of peace across the frontier dividing Kashmir just before the first goods were allowed to cross the frontier.

It is one of five border crossings which were due to be opened to assist relief efforts following the devastating earthquake in the region last month.

Two more, at Kaman Post and Tithwal, will open later this week, but India has scaled back plans announced last week after talks with Pakistan to open five crossing points.

Earlier, Pakistani fired teargas to disperse angry Kashmiris at the crossing, when the crowd realised that no people would be allowed to cross.

Only relief goods are allowed for the moment, because permits for civilians to cross have not been issued.

The earthquake killed more than 73,000 people in Pakistan, many of them in its part of Himalayan Kashmir, and 1,300 in Indian Kashmir.

Earlier this year, a bus service between the capitals of the two parts of Kashmir was resumed as relations between India and Pakistan improved.
