An Arab-American student has gone on trial in the United States accused of plotting to assassinate President George W Bush.
Ahmed Omar Abu Ali was arrested and questioned by Saudi authorities while studying at university there.
His lawyers say he only made a controversial confession after he was tortured.
The 24-year old from Virginia is also charged with conspiracy to commit air piracy and receiving financial assistance from members of al-Qaeda. He denies all the charges.
Meanwhile, a man who allegedly tried to target President Bush with a hand grenade during a visit to the ex-Soviet republic of Georgia was acting alone and not part of any broader conspiracy, Georgian officials said today.
The suspect, who faces terrorism charges in Georgia and a charge of attempted assassination in the United States, was a 'lone terrorist,' Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said.
'The investigation has not found links to foreign special services or to international terrorist organisations,' he added.
Merabishvili said that Vladimir Arutyunyan, 27, would soon be put on trial.
He allegedly threw a grenade into a crowd gathered in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, where Bush was giving an open-air speech.
The grenade was a dud and caused no injuries.
