There were further disturbances last night in the Clichy-sous-Bois suburb of Paris, where large numbers of Muslim immigrants live.

Eleven vehicles were burned out and a policeman lightly injured in the latest trouble.

Tension was heightened on Saturday when a tear gas grenade was fired into a mosque.

There are signs that the trouble may be growing, with police saying that unrest had spread to neighbouring suburbs.

Petrol bombs were used against police who arrested 12 people.

But police sources said the trouble last night was less serious than on previous nights.

The rioting started five nights ago when two teenagers of African origin were electrocuted as they climbed a fence while, it was claimed, they were fleeing from the police.

The Interior Minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, visited Clichy-sous-Bois yesterday. He met the parents of the two teenagers and promised to step up security.

Christian Malard, Senior Foreign Analyst with the French television channel France 3, said the problem stemmed from the failure of successive governments to deal with the poverty engulfing Black Africans.

Mr Malard was speaking on RTÉ Radio 1's Morning Ireland programme this morning.
