A 37-year-old man has gone on trial charged with falsely imprisoning a couple at their home in Cork last May.

Gerard Clarke from St John's Terrace, Upper John Street, Cork is also charged with possessing a Colt .45 pistol and a stun gun.

He has pleaded not guilty to five counts on the indictment.

Cork Circuit Criminal Court was told that businessman Gary O'Donovan was warned that he, his wife and his four children would be killed if he did not hand over money.

Mr O'Donovan escaped and raised the alarm after one of the raiders who was holding him fell asleep.

The trial is likely to last between two and three weeks.
