Kaczynski wins Polish presidential poll

Lech Kaczynski, the conservative co-founder of the Law and Justice party, has been elected president of Poland.

Lech Kaczynski, the conservative co-founder of the Law and Justice party, has been elected president of Poland with just over 54% of the vote.

Kaczynski comfortably beat his liberal rival Donald Tusk of the Civic Platform, who scored just under 46% of votes cast yesterday.

Some 8.26 million people voted for Kaczynski and seven million for Tusk.

Turnout was relatively low, at just under 51%.
