The sentencing of two men convicted of assaulting a cyclist in Grafton Street, in Dublin, has been adjourned for two weeks.

Dermot Cooper, a 29-year-old university graduate from Stillorgan, and 24-year-old Stephen Nugent, a tennis coach, from Swords, pleaded guilty to attacking librarian, Barry Duggan, in 2003, causing him severe head injuries.

The two men then fled the scene leaving Mr Duggan lying unconscious on the ground.

Counsel for the guilty parties have apologised on behalf of their clients saying it was a late night, alcohol fuelled scuffle that got out of hand.

They say the incident was not pre-meditated.
