The former government minister, Jim McDaid, has said he has not yet decided whether to run for Fianna Fáil in the next election after he was convicted today of dangerous driving and drunken driving at Naas District Court in Co Kildare.
Dr McDaid said he had made decisions about his future and now had more decisions to make, saying he said he had been called a disgrace and an idiot and these descriptions were quite right for what he had done.
The 56-year-old medical doctor pleaded guilty to the offences on the old dual carriageway near Naas on 26 April this year. He was banned from driving for two years.
The court was told a sample of blood taken from Dr McDaid on the night of the incident showed he was three times over the limit.
Analysis of the blood sample showed 267 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
The court was told Dr McDaid accepted that to get behind a wheel in the condition he was in on the day of the incident was a disgrace which he would never forget and would never be allowed to forget.
