US President George W Bush has selected White House legal counsel Harriet Miers to be a new US Supreme Court justice.
Ms Miers, who was previously Mr Bush's deputy chief of staff, is to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who announced her retirement in early July.
Following the formal announcement today, Ms Miers will have to be confirmed by the US Senate.
Prior to joining the White House staff, Harriet Miers was Co-Managing Partner at Locke Liddell & Sapp, where she helped manage a firm consisting of more than 400 lawyers.
In 1992, she was the first woman elected Texas State Bar President, following her selection in 1985 as the first woman to become President of the Dallas Bar Association.
