The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said he believes the gun is gone for good from Irish politics and that he hopes to see a speedy return to a devolved government in Northern Ireland in 2006.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio's This Week programme, Mr Ahern said he is hoping for a positive report from the Independent Monitoring Commission in January that would pave the way for the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
Also on the programme, the Northern Secretary, Peter Hain, commended Mr Ahern and the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, for their work on the peace process and encouraged all parties involved to work with the enthusiasm of the two leaders.
