A local man who is trying to stop the development of a prison in north Co Dublin will be able to bring a team of experts onto the 150 acre site to carry out a geophysical survey.

Richard Merne of Kilsallaghan claims that the lands are of such archaeological significance as to be a national monument.

He wants the survey carried out to support this claim at judicial review proceedings due to be heard in the High Court next month.

The State, which in the High Court today had opposed Mr Merne's application to have access to the land, has already begun a similar type of survey.

The sale of the site at Thornton Hall for €29.9m is due to be completed tomorrow.
