A cargo ship is being escorted by French naval ships to southern France after it was recaptured from workers protesting against plans to privatise their ferry company.

The ship was taken over yesterday during a riot by workers who then sailed it from the port of Marseilles to the island of Corsica.

This morning, French commandos landed from helicopters on the vessel's deck and took control of it as it tried to enter the Corsican port of Bastia.

The protestors could face 20 years in prison.
