Surgeons in the northeast have urged the Health Service Executive to re-open Monaghan General Hospital for acute surgical emergencies.
The surgeons work in both Cavan and Monaghan hospitals.
The eight have met and decided to recommend that Monaghan General Hospital should be allowed to treat patients with acute surgical emergencies.
At present such patients have to be transferred to Cavan General or other hospitals.
In a letter to the HSE, the surgeons say re-opening Monaghan for surgical emergencies would alleviate the pressure on Cavan General where, on occasion, up to 30 people have had to wait on trolleys for admission.
