The US Senate has begun hearing arguments for and against the appointment of John Roberts to the post of US Supreme Court Chief Justice.

Mr Roberts has been nominated by President Bush to replace William Rehnquist who died earlier this month.

Mr Roberts is expected to be questioned closely by Democrats on controversial issues particularly abortion. If confirmed, the 50-year-old judge will be the youngest Chief Justice in more than two centuries.
