President Mary McAleese visited PSNI headquarters in Belfast today and met the PSNI Chief Constable, Sir Hugh Orde.
Sir Hugh Orde said President McAleese's visit was an important statement by her. Sir Hugh said the President was interested in policing and the PSNI was delighted to welcome her visit.
The visit to PSNI headquarters was one of a series of engagements Mrs McAleese had in Belfast today.
However, plans for her to visit a primary school on the Shankill Road were abandoned because of security concerns.
Mrs McAleese had been due to go to Edenbrooke Primary School to meet pupils and staff.
After rioting nearby in recent days, pupils, parents and staff from the school were taken instead to a south Belfast hotel for a reception with the President.
