The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, has said is hopeful that all Irish people in New Orleans will be accounted for.
However, Mr Ahern said there were still worries over the whereabouts of some people.
Speaking on RTÉ Readio 1's News At One programme, Mr Ahern said communications in the city were very bad and that this was hampering efforts to find people.
He said an office has now been set up in Houston in Texas to meet Irish people who have been evacuated from the disaster area.
Earlier, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it had been contacted by up to 40 families concerned about relatives or friends missing in the area devastated by the hurricane.
The department subsequently said it was still trying to establish the safety and whereabouts of less than ten Irish citizens.
