Police remained on guard at sectarian flashpoints in north Belfast overnight after further clashes between rival factions.

A PSNI spokesman said two groups of up to 30 youths threw missiles at police lines in the Brompton and Cranbrook areas.

Police vehicles were struck by paint bombs, golf balls and a smaller number of petrol bombs.  The area was reported to be calm at around 11:30pm.

Incidents were also reported in the Twadell Avenue and Glenbryn areas and at Alliance Avenue. Four petrol bombs were thrown at the rear of a house of a couple in their 70s. Scorch damage was reportedly caused to brick work and guttering.

One man was taken to hospital suffering from shock.
