A British-based technology risk assessment company, Advantica, has been appointed to carry out the new Independent Safety Review of the controversial Corrib Gas onshore pipeline in Co Mayo.

The Minister for Marine & Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey, ordered the review after local people expressed serious concerns about the safety of the 9km pipeline.

Five men from the Rossport area in north Mayo have now spent seven weeks in prison for contempt of court arising from their opposition to the pipeline.

Efforts to resolve their dispute with Shell have so far been unsuccessful.
