Extra police resources were drafted into north Belfast last night as rival factions threw petrol bombs and stones during sectarian clashes in Ardoyne.
A stand-off also developed in the Short Strand area in the east of the city but police later reported the area to be calm.
Tensions have been high in Belfast since the weekend when gangs of republicans and loyalists attacked each other.
Police chiefs said children as young as six were involved in rioting that broke out on Sunday night at the Ardoyne Road/Alliance Avenue.
On Saturday up to 400 people were involved in clashes lasting several hours in east Belfast.
