A comprehensive study of Ireland's sewerage system has found around 43% of all effluent was being discharged untreated in 2002, and many treatment works were suffering serious deterioration.

The study concluded that 40% of the effluent was discharged into sensitive waters and also found Local Authorities provided figures 'of low reliability'.

However the Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, said there has been a significant improvement since then.

Minister Roche also re-iterated that Councils who rezone lands in conflict with the Spatial Strategy and planning guidelines will not get State funding for wastewater works.
