Portuguese honours for U2

The rock band U2 received one of Portugal's highest honours today in recognition of their humanitarian efforts on behalf of African poverty and human rights issues.

The rock band U2 received one of Portugal's highest honours today in recognition of their humanitarian efforts on behalf of African poverty and human rights issues.

The Order of Liberty award was presented by President Jorge Sampaio at a ceremony in Lisbon.

It is the first time that Portugal has awarded the Order to a foreign music group.

In a speech, Bono appealed for Europe to do more to alleviate poverty in Africa.
