The Tánaiste has said the government is considering the option that the three men found guilty of training FARC guerrillas in Colombia can serve their sentences here.

In a statement, Mary Harney, who is also acting Minister for Justice, said that a Bill which is currently going through the Dáil provides for a person to serve in this country the sentence imposed in the state from which they fled.

Ms Harney said it is important the three persons involved do not underestimate the Government's determination to explore all the options open to it, to ensure that Ireland plays its full part in the fight against international terrorism.

Earlier, Minster of State Brian Lenihan said the return of the three had been most unhelpful to the peace process.
