An explosion in an apartment block in Istanbul has killed two men and injured six other people, one a three-year-old child.

Police have ruled out a natural gas explosion, and said the two appeared to have been making something when they were blown apart from the waist down.

Police formed a security cordon around the area, and ambulances and fire engines rushed to the scene, in the Zeytinburnu district of the Turkish capital.

Kurdish separatists, left-wing extremists and Islamist radicals have all been behind bomb attacks in Turkey in recent years.

Kurdish rebels claimed responsibility for a bomb at an Aegean Sea tourist resort last month that killed three Turks, a British woman and Irish teenager Tara Whelan.
