An excavation by gardaí of a garden at a house in Dalkey, south Dublin, in the search for the body of a baby boy that may have been buried there almost 30 years ago has ended.

After ten days of searching the property no evidence of human remains have been found.

The dig began after a woman contacted gardaí claiming she had given birth to a boy when aged 15 in June 1976.

The woman also said she had given birth to a baby girl when aged 11 and had witnessed a person stabbing that infant to death.

It emerged last week that the Dublin County Coroner, Dr Kieran Geraghty, is to reopen an inquest into the death of a baby girl whose body was found wrapped in newspapers in a plastic bag in Dún Laoghaire in April 1973.

The woman who says she gave birth to the two children first contacted gardaí in 1995 and had wanted the garden in Dalkey to be excavated for some time.

A number of archaeological experts have expressed a view that, because of the passage of time, it was possible that if a baby had been buried there no evidence might be found decades later.

Gardaí are currently restoring the garden to its original appearance.

The current occupants of the house have nothing to do with the garda investigation.
