New regulations have been introduced by the Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, that will require Irish suppliers to pay for collection and disposal of old electrical and electronic goods.

The new regulations will apply from 12 August and will be enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency.

They affect all suppliers, whether manufacturers, importers or retailers.

Suppliers who fail to comply could face fines of up to €15 million, or ten years in prison, or both.

The minister said today he is setting up a new body to register manufacturers.

The department, in conjunction with the employers' group, IBEC, will also be holding seminars around the country to make businesses aware of their responsibilities.
