A bus driver was killed when his bus crashed into a derelict building in Castleisland, Co Kerry early this morning.

He has been named as 62-year old John O'Callaghan from Abbeydorney in Co Kerry.

Mr O'Callaghan died at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the bus which is thought to have been a privately owned 50-seater. The accident happened at 3.30am.

A section of the building, which is located opposite the River Island Hotel on the Main Street, was demolished. Much of the debris landed on the bus.

Three bystanders received minor injuries and were taken to Tralee General Hospital.

Gardaí say traffic diversions will remain in place in Castleisland for a number of days until the building is made safe.
