A report into a major leak at the Sellafield nuclear plant has raised serious concerns about the operation of the facility.

The internal report found evidence that staff at Sellafield failed to identify the rupture, which leaked 80,000 litres of highly radioactive material, for nine months.

Environment Minister Dick Roche has requested an urgent meeting with representatives of the British government to discuss the findings.

He described the leak as gross incompetence at best and concealment of the facts at worst.
