Report finds greater public confidence in PSNI
Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:00A new report indicates that public confidence in the police in Northern Ireland is on the increase.
According to the survey, 83% of respondents had at least some confidence in the PSNI's ability to maintain law and order.
The survey also found two thirds of people felt Catholics and Protestants were treated equally by the force.
The Chairman of the North's Policing Board, Professor Desmond Rea, said he was pleased with the progress being made by the force, despite it not enjoying full political support.
Speaking ahead of a Policing Board meeting in Belfast, Professor Rea said the latest survey results provide an important indicator in gauging ongoing progress towards meeting performance targets that have been set for the PSNI.
Chief Constable Hugh Orde welcomed the report and the backing it gave to his officers, particularly given the tense and difficult circumstances under which they work.
