Figures published on the first anniversary of the launch of the Luas system in Dublin indicate the two lines have carried almost 16.5m passengers.

Independent customer satisfaction research is very positive and demonstrates clearly that Luas has quickly established itself as a preferred mode of transport for many thousands of commuters.

Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, hailed the Luas as a huge success in delivering a modern day public transport system for Dublin.

The minister also called on the opposition parties to revise their views on the project saying, 'rather than nay-saying and knocking, we should be planning to deliver a world-class public transport system for our people.'

The Railway Procurement Agency said plans are at an advanced stage for extending the Green Line to Cherrywood and for extending the Red Line to the Point Depot.

It also said options to link up the two lines are being prepared and will shortly be presented for consultation.

The Chief Executive of the RPA, Frank Allen, has said he was pleased the Luas has surpassed all expectations.
