The former US congressman Bruce Morrison has said Ireland needs to introduce a permanent system of immigration.

The former US congressman Bruce Morrison has said Ireland needs to introduce a permanent system of immigration.

Mr Morrison, who introduced the Morrison Visas to the US, said a temporary system of immigration just leads to problems.

He said the Irish economy had grown at a very rapid rate because people had come from abroad to work here.

Mr Morrison said a temporary system of immigration would interfere with the healthy growth of the Irish economy because of the accumulation of people who are illegal and who cannot fully participate.

He was speaking at a news conference held by the Immigrant Council of Ireland, which was today reacting to the Government's proposals for new immigration law in Ireland.
