The management of Circus New York says the 26-year-old African elephant which gored a Kerryman in Tramore, Co Waterford, yesterday will continue to perform at the circus.
It says the animal poses no threat to the public.
The injured man, who is not the elephant's trainer, is said to be critical but stable in hospital.
Publicity Manager Martin Middleton said the man is a circus employee but he should not have been in the elephant's enclosure yesterday afternoon when the accident happened.
It is understood 35-year-old Paul Dineen had entered the enclosure to tend to the animal when it became agitated and attacked him.
Gardaí say Mr Dineen received a large cut to the side of his body and was operated on in Waterford Regional Hospital last night.
Mr Middleton said the elephants do not pose a danger to the public. Circus New York arrived in Tramore on Friday.
Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority are investigating.
