Reg Empey has been elected leader of the Ulster Unionists following a meeting of the party's ruling council

Mr Empey defeated Alan McFarland by 321 votes to 287 on the second count.

A third candidate, David McNarry, was eliminated after the first round after no candidate received the required 50% plus one.

The scale of the victory for Empey will be seen as a disappointing result for many of his supporters while the performance of Alan McFarland, who campaigned as a liberal pro-Belfast agreement Unionist, will surprise many.
