At least 18 people were killed and 46 wounded in three car bomb attacks in Shuala, the mainly Shiite district of Baghdad.

The near simultaneous attacks happened at about 4.30pm Irish time with one going off outside the office of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr, another in a parking lot and a third one on a main street.

Most of the casualties were taken to Al-Noor hospital in Shuala and the main hospital in nearby Kadhimiyah.

Iraqi state television said Sadr's Mehdi Army militia arrested a suspect at the scene of one of the attacks.
