Government ministers have welcomed an agreement reached in Luxembourg on a six-year rural development programme.
No figure has yet been placed on the value of the scheme but the package is being described as an excellent deal for Ireland.
The deal covers a wide range of issues including on-farm investment, environment measures and increased funding for the EU Leader programmes.
The package is due to begin in 2007 but the monetary value has not been fixed until the current major row over the EU budget is sorted out.
