New HIV cases down by 11% in 2004

New figures show there were over 350 newly diagnosed cases of HIV in Ireland last year.

New figures show there were over 350 newly diagnosed cases of HIV in Ireland last year - a decrease of nearly 11% by comparison with 2003.

The figures were published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre one day ahead of Irish AIDS day.

178 of  the cases were heterosexually acquired, while there were 71 new cases among men who have sex with men.

192 of those diagnosed last year were male, and 161 were female (gender was unknown for three cases).

Of the 305 cases where geographic origin is known, 136 were born in Ireland and 130 in sub-Saharan Africa.

Among injecting drug users, there were 71 new cases last year compared to 49 in 2003.

The total number of reported infections for last year is 3,764.
