Dental and DNA tests are being carried out on a body found in a car which was pulled out of a canal in Newry, Co Down on Saturday.
Police have revealed that the car in which the body was found belonged to Gareth O'Connor, who has been missing for more than two years.
The blue Volkswagen Golf was discovered following an extensive police search of the canal.
Mr O'Connor, a father of two, went missing after leaving his home in Co Armagh in May 2003. He was facing charges of membership of the dissident Real IRA.
