Police in the North are examining a car that was recovered from Newry Canal today which they believe may belong to the missing Armagh man Gareth O'Connor.

The 24-year-old went missing in May 2003 after he failed to report to Dundalk Garda Station as part of his bail terms.

He had been charged with membership of the Real IRA.

Police and Mr O'Connor's family believed he was abducted and murdered by the IRA after being kidnapped en route to Dundalk. The IRA have denied they killed him.

PSNI search teams, acting on intelligence, carried out a search of a stretch of the Newry Canal off the Omeath Road, using diving teams and heavy lifting equipment.

They removed a blue Volkswagen Golf similar to the one driven by Gareth O'Connor.

The PSNI have said the car will be forensically examined to determine if it was that of the missing man.
