A decision by the Garda Siochána to transfer five officers named by the Morris Tribunal from Donegal to Dublin has been criticised by the Opposition.

Fine Gael Senator Jim Higgins MEP said the men should have been suspended.

Labour has also criticised the move. The party's justice spokesperson, Joe Costello, said that the transfer was an inappropriate and inadequate response to the Morris report.

The five men are Thomas Rattigan of Buncrana, James McDwyer of Ballybofey, Patrick McDermott of Lifford and Martin Anderson and Martin Leonard of Letterkenny.

The report described one of them, Garda Leonard, as consistently deceitful in relation to every matter of importance.

Two of the five will serve at Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park while the remaining three will be assigned to stations in the Dublin Metropolitan area.

It is not known what duties they will perform after the transfer, which is to take place in two weeks' time.

The five officers may still face further sanction as an internal investigation into their conduct continues.

News of the transfers followed an announcement earlier this week that two senior garda officers who were criticised in the second Morris report are to retire.

The report found that the investigation into the death of cattle-dealer Richie Barron was prejudiced, tendentious and utterly negligent in the highest degree.
